Dixon Police Desire for License Plate Readers has been Shelved for the Moment

Dixon Police Chief Steve Howell said it would be a great investigative tool, however, some Dixon residents saw it as an intrusion into their activities and travel.

About a year ago, Chief Howell asked the city to help purchase License Plate Readers.  These would read license plates and be on the lookout for stolen vehicles or vehicles of interest.  The uproar caused the idea to be shelved for now said the chief.

Chief Howell points out that many people may not realize this, but in their travels, they are already having their license plate read.  He said once you cross the bridge at Grand Detour you are on the LPR systems.  Ogle County have a number of the cameras throughout the county.
