Sterling High School has named Aitken the student of the month

STERLING—Sterling High School senior Eleanor Aitken has been named student of the month for February.

She is the daughter of Julie and Kip Aitken, and she has a sister named Abigail.

What class do you find most intriguing, and why? Marissa Record’s AP Environmental Science is my most engaging class since I have a strong interest in the environment. This class comprises of numerous laboratories. Most recently, we conducted an air particle experiment in which we set two petri dishes and waited a day to see if high-use rooms had more particles. We also went on a field trip to Starved Rock State Park during the first semester to collect water samples and learn about the different locations and sorts of water.

What are your career and post-graduation plans? What school(s) or other educational activities, travel, or endeavors do you have planned? I will attend the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point to study environmental education and interpretation. I am also dedicated to playing for the women’s tennis team.

What are your two favorite extracurricular, volunteer, or community activities to participate in? Tennis is my favorite activity. My father was my coach for four years of high school, which made each memory that much more meaningful. Tennis taught me to set high objectives for myself and that hard work pays off. I’ve gained a lot of time management skills because I’m a student-athlete and need to manage my time appropriately to complete all of my assignments on time and study for examinations.

Another thing I enjoy is band, where I play the trombone. When I was younger, I used to enjoy watching the band perform and waiting for my turn to join in. My interest in band expanded as I progressed through high school, where we performed marching, pep, and concert. Band has shown me how many various elements and sections can come together to form something so beautiful.

Please share a noteworthy or memorable experience, group event, or activity from school. I qualified for the state tennis meet all four years of high school, achieving a goal I set for myself in sixth grade.

What is your hope for the future? After I earn my degree I hope to become an interpretive national park ranger.
