FOLSOM – On Wednesday morning, five inmates from the California State Prison in Sacramento were injured and brought to the hospital after a riot involving around 40 inmates broke out in the main yard, officials said.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation claimed it called for a code three riot at 10 a.m., claiming that some of the approximately 40 convicts were armed with homemade weapons.

The CDCR reported that prison staff employed chemical agents and non-lethal weapons to restore order.

Five convicts were transported to a hospital for additional treatment. The CDCR stated that the injuries were not life threatening.

The Folsom Fire Department stated that owing to the number of patients and severity of the injuries, the call was elevated to a multi-casualty event.

The CDCR reported that 11 improvised weapons were discovered from the scene.

Officials stated movement at the institution is restricted for the time being, and an investigation is ongoing.

No employees were injured.

Last Monday, the CDCR announced a homicide inquiry after officers reported two convicts fighting another in the main exercise area.
