The Sterling City Council met in regular session Monday night and alderman heard several requests for upcoming events.

Sterling High Schools petitioned to close Miller Road for Boosters Back to School fundraiser. The Rock River Hospice and Sterling Optimist Club asked permission to hold Bucket Brigades on July 6, and 20th respectively.

Mayor Diana Merdian had an assistant at the meeting, 12-year-old Brynn Ordean who served as “Mayor for the Day.” Merdian spoke of the program as a nice way to help local schools and churches raise money by auctioning off the opportunity to spend a day around City Hall.

Brynn got the chance to shadow the mayor, got a tour of the Police and Fire Departments, went to lunch, and presided over the council meeting. She said that it was a fun learning experience.

In other news, a petition was presented to close parking lot 11 on August 3rd from 11am to 5pm for the Taste of Sterling. Finally, a resolution was passed to close 4th Street for the Chalk the Walk event at Grandon Civic Center on July 13. All requests were approved by the city council.
