Lee County States Attorney Says the No-Cash Bail is Being Paid For Out of Taxpayers Pockets

By Tim Lee Jan 1, 2024 | 5:41 PM

A great many people have heard that Illinois is the first state in the country to do away with cash bail.  This means far more persons who would have found themselves in jail are being given a Notice to Appear.

Lee County States Attorney Charley Boonstra says one thing that has not been spoken about is the extra cost this brings.  This cost is coming out of the taxpayer’s pocket.

Boonstra pointed out there are now far more documents and other court information they need to prepare bringing more work onto clerk’s, court reporters and even judges.

Boonstra said they let the county board know of this before the law was implemented.  The county has been supportive said Boonstra.

He went on to say department heads, and even defense attorneys and judges are working to cut costs in their offices.
