Mary Ethel Shankel, age 101, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family.
Mary was born on October 22, 1921 in LaMoille the daughter of Everett and Zora (Preston) Shirley. She graduated from LaMoille High School class of 1935. Mary married William Robert Shankel on January 10, 1946. He preceded her in death in 1991. She worked at Blackhawk Lanes for many years and invented the “Mess” also the snack bar at Sterling WalMart for many years retiring at age 84. Mary was an avid bowler and enjoyed traveling. Mary was a loving mother, aunt, grandmother and friend.
Survivors include, two daughters, Mary (Ken) Drabek of Sterling and Jerrie Kuhlemier of Rock Falls; special niece, Kay Razo of Sterling and niece, Diane Simpkins of LaMoille; fourteen grandsons; fourteen granddaughters; twenty-seven great grandchildren; fifteen great great grandchildren and one on the way; several great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Virginia Rousey; son-in-laws Gene Rousey, Tom Razo Sr. and Evon Kuhlemier; one brother, Floyd Shirley; one sister, Joyce Shirley.
Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, May 20, 2023 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling with The Very Reverend James Keenan officiating. There is no visitation. Cremation rites will be accorded. Arrangements were completed by the McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to Serenity Hospice in Oregon.
