Newman Central Catholic High School announced the hiring of Mike Lemay as Social Science Teacher and Head Football Coach of the Newman Comets.  Prior to coming to Newman, Lemay served in a similar capacity at Sterling High School.  For the last 10 years, Mike has served as a teacher in the social studies department and served as the defensive coordinator of the Golden Warriors.  Prior to his time at SHS, he spent one year coaching and teaching at Newman.  Mike started his teaching and coaching career at Rock Island Alleman where in his lone year he helped the Pioneers to a state runner-up.

Lemay obtained his Bachelor’s degree in History Education from St. Ambrose University.  While at St. Ambrose Mike spent four years on the Fighting Bees football team where he was a standout on the defensive side of the ball.  He played both linebacker and defensive end in his 4-year career.  Prior to his Catholic education at St. Ambrose, Mike received his high school education from Newman Central Catholic High School where he was a member of the Blue Machine.  He was a member of the 2004 Newman state championship team.

Mike and his family were introduced to some of the members of the Blue Machine on Wednesday.  He will meet with the members of his coaching staff on Thursday.

In a press release from Newman Central High School Athletic Director Justin Stevenson, it states, “Mike knows what Newman football means to our school and community, and his leadership is exactly what is needed to move the football program forward.  The Newman family is beyond excited to bring an alum back to Newman and lead our football program.  Go Comets and God Bless!”

Sterling Football said on Twitter Wednesday evening, “Great coach and even better person. Can’t say enough good things about coach and what he has done for our program. Good luck!”

Lemay takes over for Brandon Kreczmer who left in January to become the Linebackers coach at Western Illinois University.
